Gridfinity sizes explained

Use this guide to compare product footprints, heights, and nominal CAD-derived external dimensions for Graphite Modular Storage Boxes and Drawer Systems. The larger 7x6 Storage Box range runs from 9U to 24U.

What the grid means

In Gridfinity-style storage, the footprint is not just a rough size label. It reflects how much grid space a storage module uses. That matters because it affects how layouts combine, how much capacity you get, and how well a system fits into the space you have.

For Graphite Modular boxes, the most practical way to think about size is in two parts: the footprint, such as 5x4 or 7x6, and the height, such as 6U or 12U. Footprint affects surface area. Height affects depth and capacity, and the larger 7x6 footprint now runs from 9U to 24U.

5x4 footprint

Compact and versatile

5x4 is a strong default choice when you want bench-friendly storage, easy handling, and a footprint that stays practical on shelves, benches, and compact workshop zones.

7x6 footprint

Higher capacity and broader layouts

7x6 gives you more usable surface area for larger parts, grouped storage, and setups where capacity matters more than keeping the footprint compact. It now starts at 9U and scales through to 24U when you need deeper storage.

Height units such as 6U, 9U, 12U, 15U, and up to 24U

6U

Shallow and fast to access

A good fit for small fixings, commonly used parts, and compact 5x4 setups where speed matters more than depth.

9U

Balanced everyday use

A practical middle ground when you want more capacity without making the box feel too deep. It is also the starting point for the larger 7x6 range.

12U

More capacity

Well suited to taller parts, grouped consumables, and mixed workshop storage where 6U starts to feel restrictive.

15U

Deeper storage with practical reach

A strong choice when you want noticeably more depth for grouped parts or tools without jumping straight to the tallest box.

18U

High-capacity grouped storage

Useful when the larger 7x6 footprint needs to hold bulkier consumables, taller kits, or mixed contents that benefit from more internal depth.

21U

Taller contents and bulk stock

A good step up when 15U or 18U still feels tight and the box will live mainly on a shelf, in a fixed bay, or in a larger workshop zone.

24U

Maximum depth for the larger footprint

Best for the largest 7x6 storage jobs where capacity matters most and quick top-down access is less important than keeping more together.

How to choose the right size for your parts

Start by asking what you are storing most often. Small, frequently used fixings benefit from a shallower height that keeps contents quick to see and reach, which often points to a 5x4 box in 6U or 9U. Mixed workshop items or taller contents usually benefit from 9U or 12U.

If your parts are wide or you want to group more items into one system, move up to a 7x6 footprint. The larger range now starts at 9U and extends to 24U, so it can cover everything from balanced everyday storage to deeper shelf-based bulk organisation. If you want a tidier, easier-to-carry box for everyday access, 5x4 is often the more practical starting point.

Quick recommendation block

  • 6U = shallow and fast to access
  • 9U = balanced everyday use
  • 12U = more capacity
  • 15U = deeper storage with practical reach
  • 18U = high-capacity grouped storage
  • 21U = taller contents and bulk stock
  • 24U = maximum depth for the larger footprint

Drawers

Shallower to medium heights are often easiest to integrate cleanly, especially when access, visibility, and drawer clearance matter.

Benches

5x4 footprints and 6U to 9U heights work well where footprint discipline and quick reach are important, while 7x6 in 9U to 15U suits grouped bench storage.

Shelves

7x6 in 15U to 24U can make better use of vertical space when the storage stays mostly in one place and capacity matters more than portability.
